How To Navigate Sensitive Skin
Skin care is personal. No two make ups are truly the same. Therefore everyone has things which work for them and routines which totally throw everything off. We are debunking some of these skin care myths to give you a clearer outlook on how to love and care for your skin.
#1 Don’t skip using skin care because you tried several products and your skin “reacted”.
I get it, you tried your friend's, sister's and your favourite actor's products, but it burned your skin. You’ve researched online, talked to the ladies in Sephora and you keep buying products that sting your skin, and you're tired of wasting money, and worse, having reactive skin. The natural thing to do is - nothing. It’s logical. But, also not ideal, and here’s why:
Your skin is the barrier between outside elements, pollution, weather, so it needs extra care. You need to use products that fortify skin’s natural moisture barrier while neutralizing triggers and improving resiliency to make your skin less prone to irritation.
#2 Do Not Go Crazy And Use A Ton Of Products At Once
Slow and steady wins the race!
Imagine if you've not worked out in ages, and then you decide that you want to get fit, so you go to a cross fit class and you give it your all. What do you think will happen the next day? Likely a trip to the physio.
This is the same thought process for your skin. Take it easy, introducing products slowly, one or two at a time. And for goodness sakes, patch test all new products before you slather them all over your face! I suggest patch testing a small area on the jawline.
You’re going to keep things simple and easy to start by using a cleanser and a cream and an SPF as your core basics before you add anything else into the mix.
#3 What Kind Of Products Should I Use Then?
Try using a gentle creamy cleanser with ceramides and free from surfactants. Use cool water to rinse it off. Do not use a washcloth, it will only agitate your skin. We love iS Clinical Cream Cleanser.
Use a hydrating cream with soothing ingredients free from emulsifiers - these are usually put into the cheap drug store brands which cause irritation.
Finally choose a physical SPF, we love TIZO for this, because a physical SPF will not sting your skin. ( plus it's good for our reefs, so you can feel good about it!)
#4 No Matter What, Do NOT Scrub Your Skin
While exfoliation is the go to for almost ALL skin issues, it so most certainly NOT for you. At least not quite yet.
We will get you there, but it won’t be a scrub to start with. You will use an enzymatic exfoliant to gently digest those dead skin cells. The last thing you need is a scrub, it’s like putting gas on a fire!
